Multi-Residential 'X' Townhouses - Glebe NSW Conceptual Design & 3D Visualisation
The brief from our client - a private developer - called for two three bedroom, and one two bedroom townhouse(s) on a 630m2 sloping block in the medium density inner city suburb of Glebe. The property is closely flanked by neighbouring residences on either side, making privacy and access to sufficient natural light key challenges within the design program.

In order to achieve the desired outcomes we utilised the basic form of an 'X' to realise the two outer townhouses, with the middle townhouse as a strike through. A limited, organic palette of materials are employed - all readily visible in the structure - with the design striking a balnce between mass and lightness, such as the folded concrete roofs which rest gently on the lower structure.
Generous glazing is teamed with brick perforation to achieve privacy whilst allowing natural light to filter into the building. Clerestory windows are featured throughout (including internal walls) ensuring natural ventilation and light to all rooms. Low level windows in the living areas offer privacy from overlooking neighbours while allowing a seated view to external landscaping.

The distinction between indoors and out is blurred through consistent use of materials. A fully open plan living design offers sightlines from front to back - including a double-height glazed atrium in the centre residence - maximising the feeling of space.

Front courtyards feature elavated walkways above sunken gardens beds - illuminated from below at night. While the large, planar roof incorporates a solar panel array for power generation (along with onsite power storage capability), and large underground tanks for water management have also been incorporated. Making for an energy and resource efficient home for it's residents.
