DD House - Lilyfield NSW Client Approved Design - Pre-DA
The owner of this property, a small 3 bedroom workers cottage on a 251m2 flat block in Lilyfied, is a personal friend.
So we were very aware of her particular wants and needs for her and her family in this partial knock-down, addition, and
renovation project.
With the rear aspect of the new living space to the south-east the specific challenge was allowing natural light to penetrate the - currently very dark - living and deck spaces throughout the course of the day. The very small building envelope also called for a design which seamlessly incorporates indoor-outdoor living, whilst adding privacy which is currently lacking.
The solution features fully retractable doors, and a continuation of the roof plane above, and flooring/decking below, to blur the line between indoors and out. Combined with large skylights to the vaulted ceilings, and space-saving built-in joinery (detail in progress), the new volume will appear much bigger than it's actual footprint would suggest.
A natural, textural material palette primarily featuring timber is in keeping with the owner's Scandinavian origins and aesthetic.
Further complimenting her impeccable collection of genuine mid-century furniture - along with numerous collected objects, books and artworks. Resulting in a warm, inviting, and functional family home.
